Holiday Cottages in the Centre of the Peak District E-mail

Here is a selection of self-catering holiday accommodation from the centre of the Peak District. Mainly cottages that sleep up to four but there are also a few larger ones. Cottages offered in association with cottages4you. Online booking available for most. The central area of the Peak District is dominated by limestone scenery, deep valleys with clear and shallow rivers, high farmland and picturesque villages. Getting around is OK but a lot of the lanes are narrow and twisty. Bakewell is the main town. One of the more popular places to visit in this central area of the Peak District is Lathkill Dale, from Monyash, you can walk down a bare sided shallow limestone valley. After a while, you will see a cave on the right, higher than it is deep. In the winter, or after periods of prolonged rain, the river Lathkill pours out of the spring at the back. During drier periods, the water table lowers and you need to walk further down the valley before you can see the river. It usually starts to appear in the bed by the time that you have reached the start of the wooded section of the dale. It is a trout river and you may even see the White Crayfish, an indicator of water that is extremely pure. Throughout the White Peak, you will see the remnants of lead and other mineral mining which was in its heyday during the 18th century.
