Perched above the town of the aptly named Castleton, Peveril Castle is one of the oldest stone castles in Britain. It was built by William Peveril, the illegitimate son of William the Conqueror and subsequently added to by Henry II. Henry acquired the castle by confiscation from Peveril's grandson, who had an affair with the wife of the Earl of Chester and then poisoned the Earl. It is currently in the hands of English Heritage and worth a visit.
