Notes

Walking

Varied terrain over short distances, plenty of limestone dales. Dovedale is very easy and has stepping stones across the river. The top end of Dovedale (south of Hartington) can give some quieter walks. North of Hartington in the Longnor area are the ridges of Chrome Hill and Parkhouse Hill. A perfect place to stay for exploring this area would be Wheeldon Trees Farm near Buxton .

Climbing

Gritstone climbing at the Roaches, the Five Clouds, Hen Cloud and Ramshaw rocks. Excellent bouldering at the Roaches, and the Baldstones. Limestone in the Manifold Valley and Dovedale. Beware of Aldery Cliff - recent rockfall, still unstable (spring 2003).

Cycling

Manifold Track, parts of the Tissington Trail and the northern end of the High Peak Trail. Backroads and bridleways.

Country Park

Ilam.

History

Some mining around Wetton.

Scenery

Wild moorland (Staffordshire border), limestone dales, attractive and interesting towns and villages.

Theme Park

Alton Towers is not far from the Peak District.
