Bakewell is a bustling town in the heart of the Peak District. The Old House Museum is sited in the oldest Tax Collectors house in the area. The building dates from the reign of Henry VIII but was later converted into mill worker’s accommodation by Sir Richard Arkwright. You can visit fourteen beamed rooms with original Tudor features and see a Tudor lavatory. You can see the Victorian millworker’s living conditions or look at old cameras. There is also a collection of toys and answers to many questions such as why is there a brass pot on the end of a barber’s pole. It is a fascinating folk museum with creaky floorboards and they claim that any ghost you hear or see is the real thing! There is always a guide on hand to answer questions and the museum also organises talks and visits.

Opens April 1st til October 31st, every day 11 - 4pm.
