How to contact ‘A Taste of the Peak District’.

The National Stone Centre has been set up in a disused quarry on the outskirts of the town of Wirksworth, just to the south of the Peak District National Park.

It is a well organised, family friendly attraction with disabled access.

At the centre, you can learn about the story of stone, follow trails through the quarry to see fossils and ancient coral reefs, try your hand at gem panning and take rubbings of fossils.

If you wish to visit a working quarry, make fossil casts or have a guide take you round, you will need to book in advance.

The Centre comissioned the building of the unique ‘Millennium wall’ which is a 200 metre section of dry stone walling that displays nineteen different styles of walling (who thought a dry stone wall was just a wall then ...?).

If you wish to try your hand at dry stone walling, contact the centre to find out about their courses.

Artists and would-be scupltors may also be interested to learn that there are sculpting courses also on offer.

The White Peak Astronomical Observing Group are based at the National Stone Centre and run public nights on Fridays. See their web site for details.
