The Chestnut Centre makes for a great family outing. It was founded in 1984 and is home to the largest collection of multi-specied otters and oels in Europe. Britains only pair of giant otters lives here.
The centre runs a breeding programme for all of its stock. Captive bred otters and owls can be released into the wild to supplement existing diminished populations or to re-establish a population where they have become locally extinct. Owls and otters are both endangered species. |
The enclosures are situated on a circular trail which wanders through wooded parkland.
The centre is open all year round, daily from 10.30am to 5.30pm from March to December but weekends only during January and February. There is a free car park situated in the centre. The nature trail is not suitable for the disabled.
